MASTER ORIXA DANCE WORKSHOP & SILVESTRE TECHNIQUE
Rosangela Silvestre the internationally renowned Master Teacher of the demanding dance training, the "Silvestre Technique" joins us from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil to instruct classes for all levels in the Silvestre Technique and Orixa Dance. She also will be presenting for the first time in Canada her one woman show "Faces of Nature".
What is Orixa Dance?
Dance originating from rituals of the Yoruban gods which have a strong presence in the North-East of Brazil. The movements and gestures of this dance come from the mythology of the spirits of nature the Orixas. A beautiful yet powerful class for anyone who loves to move.
What is the Silvestre Technique?
The Foundations of the Silvestre Technique are found in the gestures and mythology of the dances of the Orixa. These are connected with the four elements of nature; the chakras; and the three triangles of the body. Together they provide the expression and interpretation of the exercises.
The exercises work on the body structure by activating the work of toning, flexibility, and joint mobility. Along with the study and the symbolism of the gestures, in such a way that they activate interpretation and expressiveness; giving meaning to the movement. It is knowing how to express what is danced, using the body as a technically trained vehicle for that expression.
Rosangela Silvestre has rigorously researched dance and music in India, Egypt, and Cuba as part of her ever-evolving and eclectic movement palette. She has studied to evolve what we now know as "Afro Brazilian" dance. She has toured with Jazz musician Steve Coleman, and has set choreography for such companies as, Bale Folcorico da Bahia, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Ballet Hispanico, American Academy of Ballet, DanceBrazil, and Viver Brasil.
